Identify the required binder

Bitumen procurement should begin with the complete specification used by the buyer or project. Penetration grade, viscosity grade and performance-based specifications are different ways of defining a binder; similar commercial names do not automatically describe equivalent products. The required standard, test method and intended application should therefore accompany the enquiry.

Nexus does not present every bitumen grade as permanently available. A proposed source is reviewed against the requested specification and the practical requirements of shipment and reception. Modified binders or special applications require a separate technical review rather than an assumption of interchangeability.

Technical review of the proposed grade

Penetration and ring-and-ball softening point are among the characteristics used to describe paving bitumen. Depending on the specification, viscosity, flash point, ageing performance, low-temperature behaviour, solubility or other properties may also be required. The relevant test conditions and acceptance limits should be stated, not inferred from the product name.

The producer’s technical documentation is reviewed for the proposed grade. No numerical value is offered on this page because the actual limits and results must come from the confirmed specification and supplier documents. Any project approval requirement should be addressed before order confirmation.

Packaging and receiving facilities

Bulk transport and packaged transport involve different requirements. The buyer should explain its receiving tank and handling capabilities, or the equipment available to process packaged material. Drums or other purpose-designed packaging may be evaluated subject to supplier confirmation; the website does not guarantee every format.

A packaging decision must cover net weight, dimensions, handling, storage and the receiving process. Container or vessel arrangements are then reviewed for that specific configuration. A bulk proposal cannot simply be converted into a packaged proposal without checking these commercial and operational details.

Transport and safety documentation

The selected supplier’s safety data and the requirements of the carrier and receiving facility must guide the handling plan. Where heated transport or storage is involved, arrangements must be reviewed by the responsible qualified operators. This website is not an operating instruction for heating, unloading or storing bitumen.

Nexus coordinates the agreed commercial and shipping documents. The final set may include the producer’s technical and safety data, product analysis, invoice, packing or weight information, origin documents and transport documents. The exact scope is agreed for the actual grade, packaging and destination.

Supply proposal and contractual scope

A quotation is prepared for a defined product, quantity, origin and destination. The agreed delivery term, named port or place, shipment period, payment conditions and required documents should appear together in the offer. Availability is checked for that requirement; catalogue information does not reserve production or cargo space.

Changes to specification, packaging, destination or timing may require the technical and commercial proposal to be reviewed. We encourage buyers to share these constraints early. A complete brief gives Nexus a better basis for comparing supply options and preparing a proposal that reflects the actual receiving requirements.

Keep grade, specification and application together

Bitumen is supplied against a defined grade and specification. Penetration and softening point are among the parameters used in technical assessment, but a grade designation should be read with the complete set of required properties and test methods. Nexus does not publish one specification as suitable for every road or industrial application.

The buyer should identify the intended use, the specification authority and any additional project requirements. Special binders, emulsions and modified products must be requested explicitly rather than assumed to be included in a general bitumen enquiry. Availability is reviewed for the actual product and source.

Packaging is part of the technical brief

Discuss the receiving equipment before selecting a delivery format. Bulk and packaged supply involve different handling arrangements. For drums or other proposed packaging, clarify net contents, dimensions, quantity per shipment and the practical method of receiving and using the material.

Handling temperatures, storage limits and unloading procedures must come from the relevant producer and operating instructions. They should not be inferred from a marketing page. Nexus coordinates the commercial and logistics discussion; the parties operating the equipment remain responsible for their qualified procedures and safe execution.

Documents and shipment acceptance

A purchasing brief should request the product data sheet, the safety data sheet where applicable, and the agreed quality documents. Identify whether a certificate refers to a typical product profile or the consignment being purchased. Confirm language, units and the version of the specification required by the buyer.

Before shipment, reconcile the product designation, packaging description and quantities across the offer and the shipping instructions. Any independent inspection or additional test must have an agreed scope. This helps prevent a last-minute document request from being confused with a service already included in the price.
