Specify the fuel, not only the product name
Petroleum coke is a carbon-rich material derived from oil refining. Different grades serve different markets; a fuel-grade enquiry for a cement plant must not be confused with a request for calcined coke or anode-grade material. The buyer should identify the intended application and the plant’s acceptance limits at the start.
Nexus approaches petcoke as a specification-driven trade. We review the requested characteristics, the proposed origin and the supporting analysis rather than presenting a single generic quality as suitable for all industrial users. Product availability and origin are specific to the offer; the company’s principal sourcing countries do not imply local origin for every petcoke proposal.
Make the analysis basis explicit
Calorific value must be identified as gross or net, with the reporting basis and unit stated. Sulphur, moisture, ash and volatile matter also need an agreed basis so that supplier data and buyer limits can be compared meaningfully. An as-received result and a dry-basis result are not directly interchangeable.
Hardgrove Grindability Index, particle-size distribution and trace-element limits may also be relevant to the receiving plant. The buyer’s technical team should define the required tests and acceptance thresholds. Website tables are a checklist for that discussion, not a substitute for a current certificate of analysis.
Receiving plant and environmental requirements
Fuel suitability depends on the receiving process and the requirements applicable to that installation. The buyer should confirm whether the proposed product is acceptable for its equipment and operating permissions, including any relevant sulphur or trace-element restrictions. Nexus does not describe petcoke as universally suitable or environmentally neutral.
Safety data, handling information and the cargo declaration requirements should be reviewed with the relevant service providers. Any special storage, segregation, sampling or transport requirement must be communicated before the shipment is arranged. Technical and regulatory acceptance must relate to the specific cargo and destination.
Shipment, sampling and commercial basis
Cargo size, origin, loading window and destination port are defined alongside the quality specification. Independent sampling or inspection can be considered on request, with the appointment, scope and cost allocation agreed beforehand. The contract should identify the acceptance basis and any procedure for reconciling loading and discharge analyses.
Payment terms, quantity tolerances and the required document set are negotiated individually. No standard deposit percentage, minimum cargo or fixed delivery lead time is promised on this page. Nexus evaluates each enquiry according to the available source and the operational requirements of the proposed shipment.
Supply proposal and contractual scope
A quotation is prepared for a defined product, quantity, origin and destination. The agreed delivery term, named port or place, shipment period, payment conditions and required documents should appear together in the offer. Availability is checked for that requirement; catalogue information does not reserve production or cargo space.
Changes to specification, packaging, destination or timing may require the technical and commercial proposal to be reviewed. We encourage buyers to share these constraints early. A complete brief gives Nexus a better basis for comparing supply options and preparing a proposal that reflects the actual receiving requirements.
Define the material and the end-use first

Make analytical figures comparable
Request the reporting basis alongside each result. Gross and net calorific values should not be mixed, and moisture-related bases should be stated explicitly. Include the unit, the test method and whether a figure is typical, a minimum or a maximum. This makes the producer's analysis easier to compare with the purchasing requirement.
Sulphur, ash, volatile matter, HGI and particle distribution belong in the technical discussion where required by the buyer. Any requirement for trace elements should be listed specifically. Avoid accepting a table that looks complete but leaves the basis, tolerance or identification of the sample unclear. An agreed test plan is more useful than an unsupported claim of a universal grade.
From technical approval to shipment documents
Before confirming an order, agree the origin offered, the cargo quantity, the shipment period and the documents used to identify the material. Where inspection is requested, define the location, scope, sampling arrangements and recipient of the report. An inspection appointment does not itself replace the sales specification.
Quantity determination and quality determination should also be distinguished. A document supporting loaded weight is not evidence of calorific value or sulphur content. Keeping these two records separate helps the buyer compare the cargo documents with the corresponding commercial and technical requirements.
